Pheochromocytomas refer to a kind of tumor in the adrenal glands which release quite high levels of nor epinephrine and epinephrine. Like its name, the “ad-renal” glands are situated near “renal”area. You may also refer this as small glands which are located near the top of kidneys. This disorder develops over a period of time. As there is growth of cells within adrenal glands they have a tendency to spread more rapidly. As most pheochromocytomas are noncancerous or benign they usually do not spread outside adrenal glands. If they are cancerous they are likely to grow within this gland and also in the surrounding areas. It is important to recognize the pheochromocytoma symptoms so that you can avail the proper treatments as soon as possible.
A person suffering from this disorder witnesses three main symptoms: sweating, heart palpitations and headache along with noticeably elevated blood pressure. Other common symptoms besides these are nausea, anxiety, weakness, tremors, weight loss and abdominal pain. It has also been seen that the pheochromocytoma symptoms do not develop at all in few people. Around 10% people are found suffering from this disorder incidentally once they are diagnosed for some other conditions. In such cases the blood pressure is recorded constantly though it becomes difficult to record when the blood pressure is quite high. About 0.2% of people having high blood pressure suffer from this disorder.
When people are seen with the following symptoms they are said to suffer from pherchromocytoma:
- People who face a lot of difficulty in controlling hypertension.
- People who need more than four medicines for blood pressure.
- Those with the onset of hypertension before they reach the age of 35.
- Those with the onset of hypertension after they reach 60 years.
- People with pheochromocytoma symptoms.
Apart from the above mentioned signs, anything which is responsible for causing over activity of sympathetic nervous system can even led to pheochromocytoma. The sympathetic nervous system is considered the control panel which governs the release of ‘flight’ response in response to fear or stress. The things that are responsible for stimulating this are excessive use of drugs, stopping the intake of drugs (suddenly stop the intake of medications of blood pressure), spinal cord injuries and pain attacks are also listed under the pheochromocytoma symptoms.
